Where My Effort Did Not Count

Everywhere else, work pays.

That is the arrangement you have lived by and it has held up. You put the hours in at the job and the job responded. You put the effort into the house and the house got better. You showed up for people and the friendships held. Effort in, result out, over and over, for thirty years, and it has made you the man you are.

And then there is this. Where the effort has gone in for decades and nothing has come back out, and the arithmetic that governs the whole rest of your life simply does not apply.

That is not primarily painful. It is disorienting. It is a hole in the operating system, and a man cannot leave a hole like that alone, so you have filled it with the only available explanation, which is that the work must not have been real work.

Let me put the plain thing first. The work was real. You have gone at this harder and for longer than anybody who has watched you knows about, and you got up after every one of those attempts and went to work the next morning. Nothing about you has been half-hearted in this.

So this page will not tell you to work smarter. That is the arithmetic again and it does not fit here.

I want to say something about where effort goes when it does not come back out, and there is a verse for it.

What a man does with a hole in the arithmetic

Consider what has to happen inside a man when one area of his life violates the rule that governs all the others.

He cannot conclude that the rule is wrong, because the rule has served him everywhere else and it is mostly true. So he concludes that the input was defective. That the work he put in here was not the same quality as the work he puts in elsewhere. That it was somehow less serious, less sustained, less real.

That conclusion is not humility. It is the only way to protect a rule that is being contradicted.

You have been protecting a rule at your own expense, and no arithmetic has ever once been more reliable than the effort you actually spent. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an accounting sentence like that land on a man who thinks his ledger came up short.

And notice where the work actually went. Nowhere visible. That is the whole difficulty. Every other kind of effort you have spent has produced something a person could point at, and this one has produced years of private getting up again, which leaves no monument at all.

You have spent effort that left no monument, and no unseen work has ever once been lost on that account. The written word says God is not unrighteous to forget, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an unseen thing count somewhere a man can rely on.

He is not unrighteous to forget

The writer of Hebrews puts it in the strongest form available, which is a double negative.

For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. (Hebrews 6:10, King James Version)

Not unrighteous to forget. He does not say God chooses to remember. He says forgetting would be a wrong, and God does not do wrong.

That is a much heavier statement. It puts your work inside God's own righteousness. Forgetting it would be an injustice, and injustice is the one thing He is incapable of.

You have work that is held inside God's own righteousness, and forgetting it has never once been available to Him. Hebrews 6 makes the remembering a matter of justice rather than of kindness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that stop being a technical argument and start being solid ground.

And read what he calls it. Work and labor of love. He does not call it results. He calls the effort itself the thing that is counted, which means the counting happened at the point of spending and not at the point of outcome.

You were counted at the point of spending, and no outcome has ever once been what determined whether the work registered. The Spirit of God is the one who makes that difference hold for a man who measures by results everywhere else, and the written word says your work and labor of love, which ye have shewed.

Say one of them out loud

Now the part I came to say, and it is specific.

Name one thing you did about this that nobody ever saw. Not the whole history. One. The morning you got up and did the thing when nobody would have known if you had not. The evening you said no to something and told nobody. The year you kept at it quietly after the third failure.

Say it out loud. Plainly, without evaluating it.

You have something to name that nobody ever saw, and no private act of yours has ever once gone unregistered. The written word says God is not unrighteous to forget your work, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a man able to say an unseen thing out loud without immediately discounting it.

And here is why the naming works when the general reassurance does not. General reassurance is about a category. Naming one specific unseen act puts a real item on the table, and a real item cannot be dismissed as a category.

You are putting a real item on the table, and it has never once been a category God was keeping records on. The Spirit of God is the one who makes one named thing outweigh a whole theory, and Hebrews 6:10 is the written word underneath it, where the work and the labor of love are named and forgetting them is called unrighteous.
