Everybody Laughed Including Me

You laughed. That is the part that has never sat right.

Somebody said the thing, and it was said as a joke, and the room laughed, and you laughed too, immediately, before you had a chance to decide anything. And then the conversation moved on and there was never a moment afterward where the thing could be raised, because raising it would have meant admitting that you had not found it funny.

So it went in with your own laugh attached to it, which is a kind of endorsement, and it has been operating on that authority ever since.

That is why this one is harder to put down than a straightforwardly cruel remark. A cruel remark you can be angry about. You cannot be angry about something you laughed at.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. You have gone at the thing itself for years, in ways nobody in that room has ever known, and you have gotten up again every single time. Somebody who did not care would not remember the joke.

So this page is not going to tell you the person was cruel. They probably were not, and that has never helped.

I want to show you a proverb that describes exactly this, and it is not gentle about it.

Why the laugh made it stick

Consider what your own laugh did to that sentence.

It ratified it. A laugh is a social signal and everybody in that room read yours the same way: she is fine with it, it is fair game, this is a thing we can say. And crucially you read your own laugh the same way, because we all take our own reactions as evidence about ourselves.

So you concluded that if you laughed, you must have agreed, and if you agreed, then it must have been true.

You have been treating a reflex as an agreement, and no laugh in any room has ever once been the same thing as consent. Proverbs 26:19 describes a man who deceives his neighbor and then says, am not I in sport, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old proverb about jokes land on a woman decades later.

And notice how fast it happened. A laugh is not a decision. It arrives before decision, in about half a second, out of social instinct, and instinct is not testimony.

You were reacting rather than agreeing, and half a second has never once been long enough to settle anything. The written word puts the deceiving and the claim of sport side by side in one proverb, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a reflex from a consent in somebody who has never had them apart.

Am not I in sport

Solomon writes about somebody doing damage and then claiming the shelter of humor.

As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death, so is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport? (Proverbs 26:18-19, King James Version)

Firebrands, arrows, and death. That is what he compares it to.

And then the defense, which is exactly the one that gets used: am not I in sport. I was only joking. The proverb does not accept that defense. It puts the joke and the arrows in the same sentence and it does not let the humor cover the damage.

You are described in Scripture rather than being oversensitive, and no proverb has ever once been written about somebody imagining things. Proverbs 26 puts firebrands and jokes together on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a verse arrive as vindication rather than as ammunition.

And read the part that is not there, because it matters. The proverb does not say the man is wicked. It says he is like a mad man casting things, which is closer to careless than to malicious. It does not require you to think badly of him.

You are not required to think badly of anybody, and no vindication of yours has ever once needed somebody else to be a villain. The Spirit of God is the one who can validate a wound without appointing an enemy, and the written word compares the joker to somebody throwing things about rather than to somebody aiming.

Withdraw the laugh

Now the part I came to say, and it is very specific.

You can withdraw the laugh. That is a real thing you can do, out loud, today, decades later.

You are not withdrawing it from the room, which is not there. You are withdrawing your own ratification, which is the thing that has actually been holding the sentence in place all this time. The room's laughter went home with them. Yours stayed.

You are able to withdraw a ratification you gave in half a second, and no reflex of yours has ever once been binding. The written word refuses the shelter of sport for a thing that did damage, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a withdrawal like that effective rather than symbolic.

And here is why that specific action does more than deciding the person was wrong. Deciding the person was wrong requires a judgment about somebody else, which is uncomfortable and may not even be true. Withdrawing your own laugh requires nothing from anybody but you, and it removes the signature the sentence has been standing on.

You have the one signature that mattered, and no sentence has ever once stood on somebody else's laughter. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a small act do the actual work, and Proverbs 26:19 is the written word underneath it, where the sport defense is named and refused.
