The Part of Obedience People Can See

You have been in church a long time and you know how it works.

You know that nobody would say anything. You know the people there are kind and would be horrified to learn that you carry this. And you also know, with the certainty of somebody who has sat in a pew for decades, that there is a quiet ranking in every congregation, and that most of the things on it are invisible.

Prayer life is invisible. Generosity is mostly invisible. Whether you are patient with your husband on a Thursday night is entirely invisible.

This is not invisible. So you have come to believe that this is the part of your obedience that is on public display, and that everybody in that building has been reading it for years as the visible summary of the rest.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless about any of this. You have worked at it for years in ways nobody in that congregation has ever seen, and you have gotten up again every time, and you have gone on serving in that church while carrying it. Somebody who did not care would not feel the room.

So this page is not going to tell you that nobody thinks anything. That would be a guess and it would not touch this.

I want to show you a verse about who a servant answers to.

The visible and the invisible

Look at what has actually happened in your understanding of your own walk with God.

Everything that is real about it is hidden. The years of prayer, the choices nobody knows about, the forgiveness you extended to somebody who never apologized. And one thing about you is visible in every room. So the visible thing has been quietly promoted to the status of a summary of all the rest, on the sole grounds that it can be seen.

That is not a spiritual conclusion. That is a visibility bias, and it has been running your self-assessment for years.

You have promoted a visible thing to a summary, and no seen thing has ever once been a report on the unseen ones. Romans 14:4 says who art thou that judgest another man's servant, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a question like that arrive as protection rather than as a rebuke to somebody else.

And notice the direction of the error. It is not that you are proud of the hidden things. It is the opposite. You have discounted every hidden thing you have done, because it cannot be verified, and you have taken the one thing that can be seen and made it the whole account.

You have been discounting everything nobody could see, and God has never once graded a woman on the visible portion. The written word puts the servant's answering entirely toward his own master, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an accounting relationship exclusive rather than public.

Who art thou that judgest

Paul writes it as a question, and the question has an edge on it.

Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. (Romans 14:4, King James Version)

To his own master he standeth or falleth.

That is an exclusive relationship. Not primary, exclusive. The whole congregation has no standing in the matter, not because they are unkind, but because they are not the master and the account is not theirs to read.

You are answerable to one person and no others, and no congregation has ever once held a copy of your account. Romans 14 makes the servant's standing a matter between him and his own master, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that exclusivity feel like shelter.

And read the last clause, which is the one that changes the temperature. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. Paul does not leave the servant standing on his own performance. He says the master holds him up.

You are being held up rather than assessed, and your standing has never once rested on your own performance. The Spirit of God is the one who makes being held feel like being held, and the written word says he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

The grading has an owner

Now the part I came to say, and it is about ownership.

There is grading. Paul does not pretend otherwise. What he does is name the owner of it, and then point out that the owner is not in the room. Everybody in that congregation, including you, has been reading a document that belongs to somebody else.

Which means the thing you have felt in that building for years is not a verdict being handed down. It is a document being misread by people who do not hold it, including its subject.

You have been misreading a document that is not yours to read, and the grading has never once been yours to do either. The written word says to his own master he standeth or falleth, which relocates the whole matter, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a relocation like that land during an ordinary service.

And here is what it does to a Sunday. It does not make the room stop existing. It makes the room irrelevant to the question. You can walk into that building carrying nothing, not because nobody is thinking anything, but because thinking is all they are able to do, and the account is elsewhere.

You are able to walk in carrying nothing, and no room has ever once held the file. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a room lose its office, and Romans 14:4 is the written word underneath it, where the servant answers to his own master and God is the one able to make him stand.
