Somebody said something kind to you this week and you got rid of it inside a second.
You have a whole set of moves. There is the deflection, where you compliment them back. There is the correction, where you explain what they have not noticed. There is the joke, which is the most reliable one and which people laugh at, so it never looks like what it is.
And you are not being modest. Modesty would be receiving it quietly. This is disposal.
Here is what is actually going on, and I think you half know it. Accepting a kind word means agreeing that assessment of you is happening and that you are willing to hear the results. And if you agree to hear a good result you have agreed to a process, and the process will not always return that answer, and you cannot afford to be in a process like that.
So you decline all of it. Refusing the good ones is the price of refusing the bad ones, and you have been paying it for decades.
Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with this. You have thought about it more than most people think about anything and you have gone at it for years, and you have gotten up again every time. Somebody who did not care would take a compliment easily.
So this page is not going to teach you to accept compliments graciously. That is etiquette and it does not touch this.
I want to show you a verse where God takes pleasure, and I want you to notice that no grading is happening anywhere in it.
Why you cannot take the good ones
Look at the arrangement underneath it, because it is coherent and it is expensive.
You have opted out of assessment altogether. That is a real strategy and it works: nobody can hurt you with an evaluation you have refused to participate in. But an opt-out is not selective. You cannot decline the negative findings and accept the positive ones, because they come from the same process, and so the kind words have to go in the same bin.
You have opted out of a process rather than out of unkindness, and no refusal of yours has ever once been the same thing as modesty. Psalm 149:4 says the LORD taketh pleasure in his people, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes pleasure land on somebody who is braced for evaluation.
And notice the assumption that makes the opt-out necessary. It assumes that all attention is assessment. That any eyes on you are eyes measuring you, and that a kind word is a favorable reading rather than an act of affection.
You have been treating affection as a reading, and no kind word has ever once been a measurement of anybody. The written word says He taketh pleasure, which is a word about delight rather than about evaluation, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates the two in somebody who has never had them apart.
The LORD taketh pleasure
The psalm says it in the plainest possible way.
For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation. (Psalm 149:4, King James Version)
Taketh pleasure. That is not a verdict. There is no scale in that sentence, no comparison, no ranking, no criteria at all. It is the language of enjoyment, which is a completely different activity from assessment and has never once been the same thing.
You are being enjoyed rather than evaluated, and there has never once been a scale involved in it. Psalm 149 has God taking pleasure without a single condition attached, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes enjoyment recognizable to somebody who only knows how to be graded.
And read the second half. He will beautify the meek with salvation. Even the beautifying is His action. Nobody in that verse produces anything or qualifies for anything.
You have nothing to produce in that verse, and the beautifying has never once been assigned to the one being beautified. The Spirit of God is the one who makes that stop being a lovely line and start being a Tuesday, and the written word says the LORD taketh pleasure in his people.
What a compliment actually is
Now the part I came to say, and it is a small correction with large effects.
A compliment from a person who loves you is not a data point. It is an act. It is somebody choosing to give you something, and the content of it matters much less than the fact of it. When your friend says something kind, she is not filing a report. She is handing you a gift, badly wrapped, in the middle of a conversation.
Which means the disposal move is not protecting you from assessment. It is refusing a gift, in front of the person giving it, every single time.
You have been declining gifts rather than declining assessments, and no act of love has ever once been an evaluation in disguise. The written word says the LORD taketh pleasure in his people, which is God doing the same thing your friend is doing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a gift recognizable as a gift.
And here is what makes it safe to take one. You do not have to agree with it. That is the part nobody tells you. Receiving a kind word does not commit you to endorsing its accuracy. You can say thank you and mean thank you for saying that, which is entirely honest and settles nothing about the content.
You are able to receive something without endorsing it, and no thank you of yours has ever once been a verdict you signed. The Spirit of God is the one who makes that distinction hold under pressure, and Psalm 149:4 is the written word underneath it, where the pleasure is God's and no assessment appears anywhere in the sentence.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody reading this.
You are taken pleasure in, and there has never once been a scale anywhere in that sentence. I am not decorating that. Psalm 149:4 says for the LORD taketh pleasure in his people, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes a line like that off a page and puts it in a parking lot with a set of keys in somebody's hand.
And then this, which is the word I came with.
You have been handed gifts rather than findings, and no act of love has ever once been an evaluation wearing a coat. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a gift recognizable to somebody who has only ever received reports, and the passage is the written word underneath it, where God takes pleasure and beautifies and no assessment happens at all.
You do not have to believe the kind thing today. That was never the assignment. You only have to stop throwing it away.
Declare this over yourself
- Routine I run when somebody says something kind, you are not modesty. Psalm 149:4 says the LORD taketh pleasure in his people, so by the Holy Spirit you dispose of nothing else here, in the name of Jesus.
- Belief that all attention is assessment, you have no ground. The word says God beautifies the meek with salvation, and by the Spirit of God I am done refusing gifts in order to refuse findings.
- Father, You take pleasure in me and You are not grading me. Your word says the LORD taketh pleasure in His people, so by Your Spirit I say thank you and stop talking today, and then I get on with the conversation.
