Braced for the Collapse

You do not go into things hopefully. You go in braced.

And you have a good name for it. You call it being realistic. You have watched men set off full of confidence and you have watched what happens to them, and you decided a long time ago that you would rather see it coming than be surprised by it. So you begin already scanning for the first sign, and when it comes, you are not devastated, because you were standing there waiting for it.

Here is what that costs, and nobody tallies it. Bracing is not free. A man cannot brace and receive at the same time. The posture that protects you from the collapse also keeps out everything that arrives before it.

So the good weeks pass through you without landing. You have had them. You cannot remember them very well, because you were watching the door the whole time.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless. Nobody develops a habit of bracing without having been knocked down enough times to learn it, and you have gotten up after every one of those, which is the actual measure of a man. The bracing is not cowardice. It is scar tissue, and scar tissue forms over real injuries.

So this page will not tell you to be more positive. That is an insult to a man who has been keeping his feet in real weather.

I want to look at what arrives every morning whether you brace for it or not.

Bracing is a forecast, and forecasts are cheap

Look at what bracing actually is. It is a prediction about the future, made in advance, in the absence of evidence.

That is what makes it feel like wisdom: it uses the past as data. But the past is only data about the past, and every man who has ever braced has done so on the strength of a sample that did not include today.

You have been running a forecast rather than a fact, and no prediction of yours has ever once been the same thing as knowledge. Lamentations 3:23 says they are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a sentence about tomorrow's mercy useful this morning.

And notice where the bracing puts you. It puts you at the end of the story, permanently, before anything has happened. A man who is braced is already living in the collapse, so the collapse does not need to arrive to do its work. It has been extracting payment from you for years in advance.

You have been paying for something that has not happened, and no collapse has ever once required your advance installments. The written word says His compassions fail not and are new every morning, which is a supply arriving on a schedule you do not control, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that arrival noticeable to a man who is looking the other way.

New every morning

Jeremiah writes this in the middle of a book of grief, which is exactly why it is worth reading here.

It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23, King James Version)

Read where it sits. Lamentations is not an optimistic book. It is a man looking at a destroyed city and refusing to lie about it. And in the middle of that, he says the compassions are new every morning.

Not the circumstances. The compassions. He is not forecasting a recovery. He is reporting a delivery.

You are receiving something new this morning, and it has never once been contingent on the outlook. Lamentations 3 puts the new mercy inside a book of ruin, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a delivery like that noticeable to a man in a hard season.

And notice the timing. New every morning means it arrived before you were awake. It was not issued in response to how the day goes. It was there when you opened your eyes, and it will be there tomorrow regardless of what happens between now and then.

You were met before you were conscious, and the mercy has never once waited to see how you did. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a delivered thing feel delivered, and the written word says they are new every morning, spoken by a man with nothing else going well.

What bracing cannot protect you from

Now the part I came to say.

The bracing does one job well and fails completely at the other. It protects you from surprise. It does not protect you from the thing itself. If it collapses, it collapses, and you standing there watching for it does not reduce the damage by anything at all. That has been proved repeatedly and you know it.

So what the bracing actually buys is not protection. It is the absence of surprise, and that is a very small thing to be handed in exchange for every good week nobody was present for.

You have been trading every good week for the absence of surprise, and no such trade has ever once been worth making. The written word says great is thy faithfulness, which is a sentence about reliability rather than about outcomes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hand a man reliability where he has only ever been offered prediction.

And here is what makes it safe to stand down. There is something reliable, and it is not the outcome. It is the supply. The mercy is new tomorrow morning whether tomorrow goes well or badly, which means you can stop watching the door for information about it.

You have something you can count on that is not the outcome, and it has never once depended on how anything turns out. The Spirit of God is the one who makes that distinction hold under pressure, and Lamentations 3:23 is the written word underneath it, where the faithfulness is called great by a man in a ruin.
