I Never Asked What It Was For

Nobody has ever asked you what it is for.

Think about that for a second. Every conversation you have ever had on this subject, every article, every well-meant remark from somebody at church, has been about quantity. More of this, less of that, a different amount of something.

Not once, in your whole life, has anybody asked what your body is for.

And so you have never asked either, which means there is a question about yourself that has simply never been put, and the space where the answer would go has been filled with a quantity instead.

That is a strange kind of poverty and almost nobody notices they are in it.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. You have gone at the quantity question for years, harder than most people go at anything, and you have gotten up every single time. Somebody who did not care would not have spent decades on it.

So this page is not going to give you a different quantity to aim at. There is nothing to aim at on this site.

I want to ask you the question nobody has asked, and there is a verse behind it.

A question that has never been put

Consider what happens to a subject that only ever gets one kind of question.

If every conversation about a thing is about its size, then size becomes the only property it has. Not the main property. The only one. Everything else about it becomes invisible, not because it is absent, but because nobody has ever named it out loud in your hearing.

So your body has one property in your mind, and the property is an amount, and it has been that way since you were young.

You have a subject with one property and no woman has ever once been only an amount. Ephesians 2:10 says we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a verse about purpose land where only quantity has ever been discussed.

And notice what that has cost, because it is not obvious. It has cost you the ability to be pleased with anything. A quantity can only be right or wrong, so every day is a small pass or fail. A purpose can be served, which is a completely different experience and one you have almost no access to.

You have never once been allowed a day of serving rather than passing, and no quantity has ever once been able to be served. The written word says created unto good works, which are things done rather than amounts held, and the Spirit of God is the one who opens a category that has been closed since childhood.

Created unto good works

Paul writes it with a strange word in the middle of it.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10, King James Version)

Workmanship. The word carries the sense of something made deliberately, by somebody with an intention, for a use.

And then the use is named, and it is not a state. It is works. Things done, in a body, in a world, with hands.

You are made for things done rather than for a state to be maintained, and no purpose has ever once been a quantity. Ephesians 2 names the intention behind the making, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an intention like that specific rather than abstract.

And read the last clause, which is the part that undoes the anxiety. Which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Prepared beforehand. The works were arranged before you got here, which means they do not have to be found or invented or earned into.

You have works prepared beforehand and it has never once been your job to invent one. The Spirit of God is the one who makes something prepared feel available, and the written word says which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Name one thing it is for

Now the part I came to say, and it is the question nobody asked.

Name one thing this body is for. Out loud. Specifically, and in ordinary words, and it must be a thing done rather than a state.

It could be small. Carrying somebody's shopping in. Sitting with a friend who is in trouble. Getting down on a floor with a child. Making food for people. Being at a graveside. Standing at a door and letting somebody in.

You have one thing at least that this body is for, and no answer to that question has ever once had to be impressive. The written word says created unto good works and names them as prepared beforehand, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes one honest answer available where the question has never been asked.

And here is why one answer changes the arithmetic. A quantity has one axis and you have been up and down it your whole life. The moment your body has a purpose named out loud, it has a second axis, and a thing with two axes cannot be summarized by a position on one of them.

You are no longer summarized by a position on one axis, and no amount has ever once been able to describe something with a purpose. The Spirit of God is the one who adds an axis that was always there and never named, and Ephesians 2:10 is the written word underneath it, where the workmanship is deliberate and the works were prepared before anybody arrived.
