Not a Consequence

Everything that happens to you gets filed as a consequence.

Not out loud. You would never say it in those words. But watch what happens inside you when something hard arrives. There is no confusion and no protest. There is a quiet recognition, as though a bill had come and the amount was correct.

And watch what happens when something good arrives. There is confusion. You look for the catch. You find a way to explain it as an accident or as somebody being kind rather than as a thing given to you.

That is one system, running both ways. If everything hard is earned, then nothing good can be. A person cannot hold both.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with this. You have gone at the thing itself for years, harder than anybody watching knows, and you have gotten up every time. Somebody who did not care would not be running an account at all.

So this page is not going to tell you to count your blessings. That is an instruction to receive, given to somebody whose receiving apparatus has been disconnected, and it does not help.

I want to show you a scene where Jesus refuses the entire question you have been answering.

The system runs both ways

Look at the mechanism, because it is not stupid and it did not arrive for no reason.

A consequence is manageable. If hard things are earned, then hard things are predictable, and predictable is survivable. The alternative is that things happen for reasons you cannot see or control, which is far more frightening than being guilty. So a person under pressure will often choose guilt, because guilt comes with a steering wheel.

You have chosen a manageable explanation over an unbearable one, and no such choice has ever once been the same thing as the truth. John 9:3 has Jesus say neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a refusal like that arrive as relief rather than as theology.

And notice the price. The same system that makes hard things explicable makes good things impossible. Nothing can be a gift in an account where everything is a payment, and so you have been unable to receive anything for years, and people who love you have noticed and have not known what to say.

You have an account that cannot receive, and no gift has ever once been able to land in a ledger. The written word has Jesus decline the whole question of who earned it, and the Spirit of God is the one who can close an account without leaving somebody with nothing.

Neither this man nor his parents

The disciples ask the question everybody asks, and Jesus does not answer it.

Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. (John 9:3, King James Version)

Read what He does with the frame. He does not choose between the two options offered. He refuses both, and then He points somewhere else entirely.

That is worth sitting with, because it is the only place in the Bible where somebody asks the exact question you have been answering about yourself for decades, and the answer is neither.

You are looking at a question Jesus declined to answer, and the frame you have been using has never once been the one He used. John 9 has the whole cause-and-blame structure set aside in a single word, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that setting aside effective rather than merely interesting.

And read where He points instead. That the works of God should be made manifest. He moves the subject from cause to purpose, from backward to forward, and the man in the story is not asked to account for anything at all.

You are not being asked to account for anything, and no hard thing in your life has ever once required an explanation from you. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a person from a backward question to a forward one, and the written word says but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

Learning to receive one thing

Now the part I came to say, and it is deliberately small because the apparatus is rusty.

Do not try to receive everything. Receive one thing. Today. One good thing that arrives, and instead of explaining it, keep it.

The explaining is the disposal. You know the moves. It was probably going to happen anyway. She was being polite. It is not really about me. Every one of those is the ledger doing its job, and the job is to prevent a gift from being recorded.

You are able to keep one thing without explaining it, and no good thing has ever once needed an account attached to be yours. The written word has Jesus refuse to assign cause and then point at what God is doing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person keep something they did not earn.

And here is what makes it safe. If nothing hard has been a sentence, then nothing good has to be a payment. The account was never real, in either column, and closing one column closes both.

You have no ledger left in either direction, and there has never once been an account of yours that God was reading from. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an ended thing feel ended, and John 9:3 is the written word underneath it, where the question of who earned it is declined outright and the whole story turns forward.
