The ComfortPsalm 42:8

After the House Goes Quiet

This message is for the reader who is steady all day long and meets something else entirely once the house has gone quiet and there is nobody left to be steady for

You are steady all day. Ask anybody who sees you.

You get people out of the house and you do the work and you answer what needs answering and you are the one everybody else leans on, and none of that is a performance. It is real. You are genuinely that person from the moment your feet hit the floor until the house goes quiet.

And then the house goes quiet.

And something else comes into the room with you, and it has been coming for years, and it always comes at the same time, which is the hour after there is nobody left to be steady for.

That is what people miss about this. It is not weakness arriving. It is the steadiness being put down, because a person cannot hold it indefinitely and nobody ever asks her when she plans to.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. You have gone at it for years, in ways nobody in that house has any idea about, and you have gotten up every morning and been steady again. Somebody who did not care would not need the hour.

So this page is not going to give you a rule about that hour. There is no strategy here, nothing to substitute, nothing to hold instead.

I want to tell you who else is awake at that time, according to a psalm.

Why it comes at that hour

Consider the timing, because the timing is the whole tell.

It does not come at nine in the morning when things are hard. It does not come in the middle of an actual crisis, where you are famously reliable. It comes when the last demand is met, which means it is not being caused by anything in the day. It is what is underneath the day, and it becomes visible the moment nothing is standing on top of it.

You have something underneath the day rather than something wrong with the evening, and no quiet hour has ever once been the cause of what shows up in it. Psalm 42:8 says in the night his song shall be with me, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a verse about nights arrive in the specific hour a house goes quiet.

And notice what you have been doing with that hour for years. Carrying it alone, silently, without ever mentioning it, because mentioning it would require an explanation and there is no short one. So the one hour in the day when you are least resourced is also the only hour you spend entirely by yourself.

You have been alone in the hour you were least resourced for, and no woman has ever once been meant to hold an hour like that by herself. The written word says in the night his song shall be with me, which puts somebody in the room at that exact time, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a presence noticeable to somebody who has assumed the room is empty.

In the night his song shall be with me

David writes about days and nights differently, and the difference is worth seeing.

Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. (Psalm 42:8, King James Version)

In the daytime, lovingkindness commanded. In the night, a song.

He does not say the night is exempt. He gives the night a different provision, and the provision is music, which is what you give somebody who is awake and cannot be given information.

You are given a song rather than an instruction for that hour, and no night of yours has ever once been left without a provision. Psalm 42 distinguishes the day and the night and supplies both, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a night provision noticeable at the hour it is intended for.

And read where the psalm sits. It is the psalm of a man whose soul is cast down and who says so repeatedly. This is not a line from a good week. It is written from inside the thing.

You have a line written from inside it rather than from above it, and no verse about nights has ever once been composed by somebody who was fine. The Spirit of God is the one who makes that solidarity felt, and the written word says in the night his song shall be with me, in a psalm that opens with a soul panting like a hunted animal.

Do not review the day

Now the part I came to say, and it is what to leave out rather than what to add.

Do not review the day. That is the whole instruction. When the house goes quiet, the review starts, and the review is what turns an hour of tiredness into an hour of accounting.

You know the review. What happened, what was said, what you did in that hour, and what it means about you. It runs automatically and it has run for years and it has never once produced anything useful.

You are not required to hold court at the end of a day, and no evening review has ever once produced a single useful finding. The written word gives the night a song rather than an audit, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can end a session that starts by itself.

And here is what goes in its place, which is almost nothing and is the point. A song. Not an activity, not a substitute for anything, not something to do instead. Somebody in the room with music in it while you sit there and are tired.

You have company in that hour and it has never once had to be earned by getting through the day well. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an occupied room feel occupied at eleven at night, and Psalm 42:8 is the written word underneath it, where the night gets a song and the psalm was written by a man whose soul was cast down.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody tonight.

You are not alone in that hour, and no house has ever once been empty of Him because it was empty of everybody else. I am not decorating that. Psalm 42:8 says in the night his song shall be with me, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes a line like that off a page and puts it in a kitchen at eleven at night.

And then this, which is the word I came with.

You have a provision made specifically for the night, and it has never once had to be earned by getting through the day well. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a night provision noticeable at the hour it was made for, and the passage is the written word underneath it, where the day gets lovingkindness and the night gets a song and the man writing it says his soul is cast down.

You do not have to feel steadier tonight. That was never the assignment. Somebody is awake with you.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Hour after the house goes quiet, you are not an empty room. Psalm 42:8 says in the night his song shall be with me, so by the Holy Spirit you hold nobody alone in this house, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Review that starts by itself at the end of the day, you have no findings to deliver. The word gives the night a song and not an audit, and by the Spirit of God I am done holding court on myself at the end of a day.
  3. Father, Your song is with me in the night and You are awake in this hour. Your word says in the night His song shall be with me, so by Your Spirit I sit here tonight without reviewing anything, and then I go up to bed.
