Caught in a Store Window

The mirrors in your house are not the problem. You have those managed.

You know where they are. You know which ones you use and which ones you walk past and how to get through a morning without a single unnecessary look. Years of practice have gone into that and it works, and on a normal day nobody would guess there was anything to manage at all.

It is the ones you did not plan for.

A store window on an ordinary errand, at the wrong angle, in the wrong light, with your arms full. A dark screen that turns into a mirror when the video ends. A car window as you walk up to it. And it is not even the sight of yourself that does it, because you have seen yourself before. It is being caught. It is that the picture arrived without permission, in public, while you were doing something else entirely, and there was no time to arrange your face for it.

And then the day is different. Not ruined, exactly. Just quieter. You still finish the errand. You still make the calls and get the dinner on. But something has gone out of it, and you spend the rest of the afternoon in a room with somebody you would rather not be sitting next to.

Before anything else, let me say the thing that gets left out. You have not been sloppy about this. You have been working at it, in one way or another, for most of your adult life. You have tried and you have tried again and you have gotten up more times than anyone who has not carried this could imagine, and the fact that you have a whole system for managing the mirrors in your own home is not evidence of vanity. It is evidence of somebody who has been paying attention and has kept going anyway.

So I am not going to tell you to stop minding. And I am not going to hand you a way of looking at store windows differently, because that is one more thing to do and you have enough.

I want to tell you about the order of events. Who was looking first.

Why the ambush costs more than the mirror

There is a reason the window costs you more than the bathroom does.

At home the conversation opens on your terms. The looking happens when it is chosen, with the bracing already done, and a braced look is survivable. The window in town does not ask. It hands you a picture of yourself while your guard is on the ground, and the guard is the thing that was holding the rest of the day together.

That is not fragility. That is what happens to anybody whose only defense against something is preparation.

You are not weak for being undone by an ambush, and preparation has never once been the thing that was holding you up. It is written in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that we behold as in a glass and are changed by what we are beholding, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the changing, which means the work was never yours to brace for.

And here is the part underneath it. What arrived in that window was not new information. You already knew. Nothing was revealed. What actually happened is that a voice you carry all day got permission to speak up, because the picture gave it something to point at.

You were not shown anything you did not already know, and no window in any town has ever handed a verdict to a voice that had no right to speak. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the microphone away from a voice like that, and 2 Corinthians 3 is where it is written that beholding is what changes a person, which is a sentence about direction and not about surveillance.

What Paul says we are beholding

Paul is writing about faces and glass and change, which is why this passage belongs on a page like this one.

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. (2 Corinthians 3:18, King James Version)

Notice what is in the glass in that verse.

Not you. Him. Paul is not describing a woman inspecting herself. He is describing people looking at the glory of the Lord and being changed by the looking, and then he names who does the changing, and it is not the one doing the looking. It is the Spirit of the Lord.

You have been handed a mirror with somebody else in it, and the changing has never once been the job of the person doing the beholding. It is written in 2 Corinthians 3:18, even as by the Spirit of the Lord, which puts the whole weight of it on Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a relief rather than a doctrine.

That is the reversal, and it is the reason nothing on this page is going to become an assignment. Every plan you have ever been handed made the change your job and the looking your tool. Paul has the looking pointed elsewhere and the change belonging to God.

You are being changed by something other than your own inspection, and the mirror was never the instrument. It is written that we are changed from glory to glory by the Spirit of the Lord, and the Spirit of God is the one who does that quietly in a woman who is only trying to get through an errand.

He was looking first

Now the thing I most want you to have, and it is about sequence.

There is a picture in your head of how being seen works. Something happens, and then God looks, and then He reacts. Which means every unplanned reflection is a fresh event that He is now going to have an opinion about, and you get to be present for the forming of it.

That is not the order. It has never been the order. He was looking before the window was. He was looking this morning, and while you were choosing what to wear, and during the years when you were managing every mirror in the house so well that nobody noticed. There was no moment in that store when God arrived and formed a view.

You are not being watched as something new, and God has never once had to catch up with a reflection. The written word says the beholding is of His glory and the changing is by His Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old sentence land in a woman standing on a sidewalk.

There is a difference between being watched and being looked at, and the whole of your peace lives in that difference. Watched is somebody forming a view. Looked at is somebody who already loves you keeping their eyes on you.

You were looked at first, and the eyes on you have never once been forming a view. The Spirit of God is the one who makes that difference something a person can feel rather than merely agree with, and 2 Corinthians 3 is the written word where the glory being beheld is His and the work being done is His as well.
