By the time you get in the door you genuinely cannot tell.
That is not a figure of speech and it is not an excuse. You have worked with your body all day and the signals have all run together, and what you are left with is a large undifferentiated need with no label on it.
Somebody who works at a desk can tell. They have a body that has been quiet all day and reports clearly. Yours has been shouting since morning and by evening the shouting is one sound.
And every single piece of advice ever given about this assumes you can tell. Ask yourself whether you are actually hungry. You have asked. There is no answer available.
Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. You have worked harder in a body than almost anybody, and you have gone at the thing itself for years and gotten up every morning to do it again. Somebody who did not care would not have asked the question.
So this page is not going to teach you to read your body better. That is a skill and this is a physics problem.
I want to show you a verse about somebody being given something while they sleep.
A physics problem, not a discernment problem
Consider why the advice does not work, because it is not your fault and nobody has ever explained it to you.
Hunger and exhaustion use overlapping signals in a body: shakiness, a hollow feeling, an inability to concentrate, a demand for something now. In a rested body those are distinguishable because they arrive separately. In a body that has been working since dawn they arrive on top of each other, and there is no instrument in you that can separate a signal from an identical signal.
You have a physics problem rather than a discipline problem, and no instruction to read yourself better has ever once been able to separate two identical signals. Psalm 127:2 says he giveth his beloved sleep, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a verse about rest arrive on a man who has been trying to make a decision instead.
And notice what the demand to tell them apart has been doing. It has been adding a judgment to the end of a hard day. First the work, then the exhaustion, then a test you cannot pass, and then a verdict about yourself for failing a test that had no answer key.
You have been failing a test with no answer, and no verdict from it has ever once been valid. The written word says it is vain to rise up early and sit up late and eat the bread of sorrows, and the Spirit of God is the one who cancels an examination rather than helping somebody pass it.
He giveth his beloved sleep
The psalm is blunt about effort and it lands where you would not expect.
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. (Psalm 127:2, King James Version)
Read the whole shape of it. Rising early, sitting up late, eating the bread of sorrows. That is a description of a man running on effort and anxiety, and the psalm calls it vain, which does not mean sinful. It means it does not produce what he thinks it produces.
And then the turn: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. The thing being handed over is not a strategy. It is sleep.
You are being handed sleep rather than a method, and no method has ever once been what was on offer in that verse. Psalm 127 sets the effort and the anxiety against something given, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a gift like that recognizable to a man who has been trying to settle on the right answer.
And read what he is called in it. His beloved. Not his workers. Not the ones who got it right. That is the name the man carries while he is being given sleep, which means it was never earned by discernment or by anything else.
You are called beloved in the middle of not knowing, and it has never once been a name earned by getting things right. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a name like that stick to a tired man, and the written word says for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
Say you cannot tell
Now the part I came to say, and it is a permission rather than an instruction.
Say out loud that you cannot tell which one it is. That is the whole thing. Not as a confession. As a plain description of a real physical situation, said by a man who has been working since first light.
You are allowed to not know, and no honest not knowing has ever once been the same thing as a failure. The written word calls the running on effort vain and hands over sleep instead, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an admission like that restful rather than shameful.
And here is why saying it out loud does something. The unanswered question has been running silently for years, and a question running silently keeps demanding an answer. Said out loud as unanswerable, it stops being a question. It becomes a fact about a working man in the evening, and facts do not require verdicts.
You have a fact rather than a question now, and no fact has ever once required a verdict at the end of it. The Spirit of God is the one who closes a question that cannot be answered, and Psalm 127:2 is the written word underneath it, where the striving is called vain and what is given is sleep, to somebody called beloved.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man reading this.
You are called beloved in the middle of not knowing, and that name has once never been earned by getting anything right. I am not decorating that. Psalm 127:2 says for so he giveth his beloved sleep, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes a line like that off a page and puts it on a doorstep at the end of a working day.
And then this, which is the word I came with.
You have been handed sleep rather than a method, and no strategy has ever once been what was on offer in that verse. The Spirit of God is the one who cancels an examination instead of coaching a man through it, and the passage is the written word underneath it, where the rising early and the sitting up late are called vain and what is given is rest.
You do not have to settle which one it is today. That was never the assignment. Say that you cannot tell.
Declare this over yourself
- Test I have been failing on my own doorstep, you have no answer key. Psalm 127:2 says he giveth his beloved sleep, so by the Holy Spirit you examine me no longer, in the name of Jesus.
- Verdict at the end of a working day, you have nothing valid to hand down. The word calls the rising early and the sitting up late vain, and by the Spirit of God I am done trying to separate two identical signals.
- Father, You give Your beloved sleep and I am not required to know which one this is. Your word says for so He giveth His beloved sleep, so by Your Spirit I sit down and say it out loud tonight, and then I get up and do what is next.
