I Dread the Beginning

Everybody assumes the hard part is the middle.

That is what the encouragement is always aimed at. Push through the middle. The middle is where people quit. And if the middle were the problem you would have solved this a long time ago, because you have gotten through worse middles than most people ever attempt.

The part you dread is the beginning.

Not because a beginning is difficult. A beginning is the easiest hour there is. You dread it because the beginning is where all of them are stored. Every previous first day is filed in that hour, and the moment you stand in it again, the whole archive opens at once, and you are not beginning a thing, you are walking back into a room full of people who have all seen you do this before.

That is why the first hour costs more than the tenth week. And nobody has ever told you that out loud, so you have carried the dread as evidence that something is wrong with you.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless. You have gone at this more times than anybody watching would guess, and you have gotten up again after every single one of them, and the fact that you dread starting is not a character defect, it is what happens to a person who has begun honestly a great many times and remembers all of it. That is memory, not weakness.

So this page will not tell you to try once more. It is not a relaunch and there is no next Monday in it anywhere.

I want to go into the archive with you and read what God has done with it.

The archive is not a record

Here is what the dread is actually made of, and it is worth naming precisely.

It is not fear of effort. You know effort. It is the certainty that the whole set of previous attempts is present in the room and available for reference, and that beginning again is the act that makes them all count. As long as you are not starting, they are dormant. Start, and they wake up.

You are not walking into a room full of your own history, and no previous attempt has ever once been kept on file for a moment like this. Isaiah 43:18 says remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can make a sentence like that actually operate rather than merely comfort.

And notice who is doing the remembering in that arrangement. Not God. You. The archive is yours, it is kept in your handwriting, and you have been the only person consulting it. That is not a small distinction, because a record nobody else holds is not a record, it is a habit of mind.

You have been the only reader of that file, and heaven has never once opened a copy of it. The written word says remember ye not the former things, which is God telling somebody to stop consulting an archive He is not consulting, and the Spirit of God is the one who closes a drawer that a person has not been able to close.

Behold, I do a new thing

Isaiah is speaking to people with a long, well-documented history of getting it wrong.

Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? (Isaiah 43:18-19, King James Version)

Read the order. First the instruction to stop consulting the old material. Then the new thing.

Not the other way around. He does not say prove yourself and then I will do something. He says put the archive down, and then look at what is springing up.

You have been given the order of operations, and it has never once started with a demonstration from you. Isaiah 43 puts the release of the old before the arrival of the new, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a person able to obey a command about their own memory.

And notice the word now. Now it shall spring forth. There is no waiting period in that verse, no probation, no observation window in which you demonstrate that this time is different.

You are not on probation with God, and there has never once been a waiting period between the release and the new thing. The Spirit of God is the one who makes now mean now to somebody who has learned to expect delay, and the written word says behold, I do a new thing, spoken to people whose record was public.

What the dread was protecting

Now the part I came to say.

The dread has a job and it has been doing it faithfully. Its job is to keep you from being humiliated again. And humiliation, not difficulty, is the actual injury of the last several attempts. That is why the beginning is the dangerous hour. Not because the work is hard, but because that is the hour in which hope becomes visible to other people, including you.

So the dread is not laziness and it is not unbelief. It is a guard standing at the only door where you have ever actually been hurt.

You were being guarded rather than sabotaged, and the dread has never once been evidence of a flaw in you. The written word says remember not the former things, which treats the old material as something to be released rather than punished for, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can retire a guard without leaving a person exposed.

And here is what makes it safe to let the guard stand down. There is nothing to be humiliated in front of. The audience the dread is protecting you from is not there. God is not in the room reviewing the tape, and He has not once compared this hour with any other hour.

You have no audience for this, and God has never once watched an attempt of yours with a record open beside Him. The Spirit of God is the one who empties a room that has felt crowded for twenty years, and Isaiah 43 is the written word underneath it, where the old things are dismissed by God before anything new is asked of anybody.
