It came out of nowhere and it has never left.
That is the part that has no shape to it. Everything else you carry has an author. A parent, a brother, somebody who mattered. This one came from a person you had never seen before and never saw again, in a parking lot or a checkout line or a sidewalk, delivered in about two seconds by somebody who then walked away and has not thought about it since.
And it is still running. Years later. From a stranger.
That is the thing you cannot make sense of, and the not making sense of it is part of what has kept it in place. You have found ways to deal with sentences from people you know. There is no way at all to handle a sentence with no relationship attached to it.
Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. You have gone at the thing itself for years, in ways nobody has ever seen, and you have gotten up again every time. Somebody who did not care would have forgotten a stranger inside a week.
So this page is not going to tell you the person was troubled. They probably were, and that has never once helped.
I want to talk about who was standing there, and there is a psalm for exactly this.
A sentence with no relationship attached
Consider why a stranger's sentence has been so much harder to deal with than a relative's.
A sentence from somebody who knows you can be weighed. You know what they are like, what they were going through, whether they meant it. All of that is material for putting it down eventually.
A stranger's sentence has none of that. It arrives with no context and there is nothing available to weigh it against, so it does not read as one person's opinion. It reads as the world's opinion, delivered by a random sample of it.
You have been reading one person as a sample of everybody, and no stranger has ever once spoken for the world. Psalm 121:7 says the LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a promise about keeping arrive in a parking lot years later.
And notice the second reason it stuck. It was undefended. You had no reason to have a guard up in a checkout line, and so the sentence came in through a door that was standing wide open on an ordinary afternoon.
You were undefended in an ordinary place, and no ambush has ever once been evidence of a weakness in the person it landed on. The written word says he shall preserve thy soul, which is a keeping rather than a shielding, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that distinction matter to somebody who did get hit.
He shall preserve thy soul
The psalm is about keeping, and it is worth reading what it actually claims.
The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in, from this time forth, and even for evermore. (Psalm 121:7-8, King James Version)
Preserve thy soul. Not preserve you from ever being spoken to. The psalm does not promise a life in which nothing lands.
It promises that the part of you that matters is kept, through the landing, by somebody who does not sleep. The psalm says that a few verses earlier: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
You have been kept through it rather than kept from it, and no sentence that landed has ever once got past the keeping. Psalm 121 promises preservation of the soul rather than absence of trouble, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a keeping felt by somebody who remembers the moment it did not feel like one.
And read the last part, because it names the ordinary. Thy going out and thy coming in. That is errands. That is the parking lot and the checkout line and the sidewalk. The psalm puts God's keeping precisely in the places where your sentence arrived.
You were being kept in the exact place it happened, and no ordinary errand has ever once been outside the keeping. The Spirit of God is the one who puts a psalm in a specific parking lot, and the written word says the LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in.
Go back into that kind of place
Now the part I came to say.
Go into the same kind of place. Not the same one, necessarily, though it can be. The same kind: a store, a lot, a line, the ordinary public where it happened.
And go in saying that the voice belonged to nobody. Because it did. That is not a comforting reframing, it is a factual description: the person had no relationship to you, no knowledge of you, and no standing, and they were a passing stranger with a bad afternoon.
You are able to walk back into that kind of place today, and no voice from a stranger has ever once held standing over anybody. The written word puts the keeping in the going out and the coming in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary errand a place where something is settled.
And here is why going back in matters. The sentence has been converting a whole category of ordinary places into places where something can happen. Walking into one, on purpose, and having nothing happen, is what shrinks the category back to its real size.
You have a category that can be shrunk back, and no store has ever once been the kind of place the sentence made it. The Spirit of God is the one who makes one ordinary errand do that work, and Psalm 121:7 is the written word underneath it, where the soul is preserved and the going out and coming in are named.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody reading this.
You are kept through it rather than kept from it, and no sentence that landed has once got past the keeping of your soul. I am not decorating that. Psalm 121:7 says the LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes a line like that off a page and puts it inside a store with sliding doors.
And then this, which is the word I came with.
You were being kept in the exact place it happened, and no ordinary errand of yours has ever once been outside that keeping. The Spirit of God is the one who puts a psalm into a specific parking lot on a specific afternoon, and the passage is the written word underneath it, where the going out and the coming in are named and the keeping does not sleep.
You do not have to make sense of the stranger today. That was never the assignment. Walk into that kind of place and let nothing happen.
Declare this over yourself
- Voice from a stranger in a public place, you belonged to nobody. Psalm 121:7 says the LORD shall preserve thy soul, so by the Holy Spirit you speak for no one, in the name of Jesus.
- Category of ordinary places that became dangerous, you are shrinking back to size. The word says the LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in, and by the Spirit of God I am done reading one stranger as a sample of the world.
- Father, You kept me then and You keep me still. Your word says He that keepeth thee will not slumber, so by Your Spirit I walk into that kind of place today, and then I go home.
