Alone in the Car

It happens in the car, and the car is the whole story.

Think about where the car sits in your day. It is after. After the work, after the people, after being the one who handles things. And it is before. Before the door, before the house, before whoever is inside needs you to be the person who walked in yesterday and the day before.

The car is the only place in your life that is neither.

So of course it happens there. That is not a mystery about your appetite, it is a fact about your geography. You have one room in your entire day where nobody requires anything of you, and it has four wheels and it is parked in your own driveway with the engine off.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. You have gone at it for years, in ways nobody in that house knows about, and you have gotten up every morning and been strong again. Somebody who did not care would go straight in.

So this page will not tell you not to sit in the car. There is no strategy on this site and there is nothing here about resisting anything.

I want to talk about the arriving, and who is already in the car.

What the car is doing

Consider what the pause in the driveway is actually for, because it is not a delay.

It is a decompression. You have been holding a shape all day, and you cannot walk in the door still holding it, and you cannot walk in without it either. So there is a small interval in which the shape gets put down and picked back up, and the interval has to exist somewhere, and it exists in the car.

You have an interval rather than an indulgence, and no pause of that kind has ever once been a failure of will. Second Corinthians 1:3 says the God of all comfort, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a title like that arrive in a parked car rather than in a sermon.

And notice what has to be true for a person to need that interval. It means arriving is work. It means walking into your own house is a performance with a shape to it, and that you have been doing that particular performance for years without anybody in there knowing it is one.

You have been performing an arrival, and no house has ever once required a person to come in strong. The written word calls Him the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, which is a name rather than a strategy, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a name like that useful at the exact moment the engine goes off.

The God of all comfort

Paul opens a letter with a title, and the title is doing the work.

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort. (2 Corinthians 1:3, King James Version)

The God of all comfort. All of it. Not some of it, not the spiritual portion of it, not the comfort that comes after a person has sorted themselves out.

Which means whatever comfort you have found in that car has been His the whole time, and whatever you have not found there was never going to be there because the supply was never in the car.

You have been drawing on His supply the whole time, and no comfort anywhere has ever once come from another source. Second Corinthians 1 puts all comfort under one name, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes ownership like that recognizable to somebody who has been finding scraps of it alone.

And read what Paul writes next in that chapter, because it is the reason the title matters. He says God comforts us in all our tribulation, and then that we may be able to comfort others. The comfort arrives before there is anything to do with it.

You are comforted before you are useful, and there has never once been a requirement that comfort be productive. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an unearned comfort feel receivable, and the written word says the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort, said as a blessing before anything is asked for.

Ask in the car

Now the part I came to say, and it does not require you to leave the car.

Stay in the car. That is the first thing. Nothing on this page asks you to go in sooner or to stop doing the interval.

In the car, say out loud what you are carrying. Not a summary. The actual thing, in plain words, badly. And then ask the God of all comfort for it, out loud, in the car, with the engine off.

You are able to ask for it where you are rather than where you should be, and no comfort has ever once been available only indoors. The written word calls Him the God of all comfort without limiting where the supply is drawn from, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes asking possible in a driveway.

And here is what that changes about walking in. Not the shape. You will probably still put the shape back on, and that is fine, and it does not need dealing with today. What changes is that you go in having been met rather than having gotten through, and those are two entirely different men walking through the same door.

You are going in met rather than merely through, and no arrival has ever once had to be made strong. The Spirit of God is the one who meets a person in a car before the door, and 2 Corinthians 1:3 is the written word underneath it, where all comfort is under one name and the blessing comes before any request.
