Decided From Across the Room

You do the arithmetic before you sit down.

Not deliberately. It happens in the doorway. You come into a room and something in you runs a quick assessment of what everyone in it has already concluded, and then you take a seat carrying the results, and the results are always the same. They have decided something about your discipline, your seriousness, whether you can be relied on, what kind of man you are.

You have never once asked anybody whether that is what they were thinking. It would be an absurd question. So the conclusion stands unexamined and it has stood for years.

And the cost is not the discomfort. The cost is that you have been managing a room instead of being in one. You are working the whole time you are in there, and the work is invisible, and you go home tired from a social evening in a way that nobody around you understands.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless about this. You have worked at it for years in ways nobody in any of those rooms has ever seen, and you have gotten up again after every attempt. A man who did not care would walk into a room and sit down and eat.

So this page is not going to tell you that nobody is thinking anything, because some of them probably are, and I am not going to insult you with that.

I want to show you a verse where Jesus says plainly which kind of judging is worth anything.

The second job in every room

Consider what that doorway assessment costs, because it is not free and it has been running for decades.

Every social occasion has a second job in it for you. There is the occasion, and there is the management of what you believe people have concluded. So you are never simply present. You are performing an ongoing correction to a verdict that may not even exist, and you are doing it while eating and talking and being asked about your work.

You have been doing two jobs in every room, and no man has ever once been required to hold court in his own defense at a dinner. John 7:24 says judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an instruction to other people land as relief in the one being looked at.

And notice who the instruction in that verse is aimed at. It is aimed at the people doing the looking. Jesus is not telling the man being assessed to bear it better. He is telling the room to stop.

You are not the one being corrected in that verse, and the burden has never once been placed on the person being looked at. The written word puts the fault in the method of the observer, and the Spirit of God is the one who moves a weight off the shoulders of somebody who has been carrying it for the whole room.

Judge not according to the appearance

Jesus says this in the middle of an argument, which is worth knowing.

Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. (John 7:24, King James Version)

He is not making a general remark about kindness. He is correcting a crowd that has drawn a conclusion from surface information, and He does it bluntly, and He does not soften it.

Which means the method you have been assuming everybody uses is a method Jesus specifically names and rejects.

You are being assessed by a method Jesus rejected out loud, and no surface reading has ever once been what He calls righteous judgment. John 7 has the correction go to the crowd rather than to the man, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that reallocation land in the chest of somebody who has been absorbing it.

And read the second half, because that is the part that gets skipped. But judge righteous judgment. He does not abolish judgment. He replaces the basis of it. There is a real reading of a man available, and it does not run on appearance at all.

You have a real reading available, and it has never once been done from across a room. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a man aware of being read accurately somewhere, and the written word says judge righteous judgment, which means an accurate assessment of you exists and is not the one you have been imagining.

What He does instead

Now the part I came to say.

God has a judgment about you. That is not what this page is removing. What it is removing is the method. His assessment of you does not begin at the door. It did not begin with information available across a room, and it was not formed in the interval between you walking in and sitting down.

His reading of you includes the years nobody saw. It includes every time you got back up. It includes the hour you spent on the phone with somebody last month that nobody in that room knows about.

You are read from the inside out, and God has never once formed a view about a man from the far side of a room. The written word says judge righteous judgment rather than by appearance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes accurate feel safe to a man who has assumed accurate would be worse.

And here is what that does to a doorway. It does not empty the room of opinions. It relocates the one that counts. There is a verdict, it is the only one with weight, and it was not formed in a doorway and cannot be revised in one.

You have a verdict that no doorway has ever once been able to revise, and it was never formed in one. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a settled thing feel settled, and John 7:24 is the written word underneath it, where Jesus names surface judging as the wrong method and puts something better in its place.
