Starting AgainPsalm 27:10

The Silence at My Own Table

This message is for the reader whose family has watched every attempt and has learned to say nothing at all, and the silence is louder than the teasing ever was

They used to say things. Now they say nothing, and the nothing is worse.

Not cruelly. Your family are not cruel people. Years ago somebody would make a remark, and there would be a laugh, and you would laugh too, and that was survivable because at least it was out loud and you could answer it.

What happens now is a small adjustment in the room. A pause that gets smoothed over. A subject that gets changed a half second early. Somebody asking about the weather with slightly too much interest.

They have learned. They know it upsets you and they love you and so they have arranged themselves around the subject, and that arrangement is the loudest thing at that table.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. You have gone at it and gone at it in ways nobody at that table has ever seen, and you have gotten up after every single one, and you have kept showing up to family dinners, which takes more than anybody there knows. Somebody who did not care would not notice the pause.

So this page is not asking you to try again in front of them, and there is no plan here and no next Monday.

I want to talk about who has not gone quiet.

Why tact hurts more than a remark

A remark can be answered. That is the whole difference.

If somebody says something, you can push back, or laugh, or let it go, and either way the thing has been said and the room has moved on. Tact cannot be answered. You cannot say to a table, I noticed you all being careful. It would be true and it would be unbearable, so you sit there and receive it, and it goes in deeper than any remark ever did.

You are receiving something that has no answer available, and no woman has ever once been able to argue with a room that is being kind. Psalm 27:10 says when my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a verse about family land at a family table.

And notice what the tact communicates without meaning to. It says: we all know, we have all decided this is a permanent feature of you, and the loving thing now is not to mention it. Their kindness has quietly closed the case.

You have had a case closed on you by people who love you, and no verdict of theirs has ever once been the standing one. The written word says the LORD will take me up, spoken about the moment the nearest people fall short, and the Spirit of God is the one who picks somebody up in a room where everybody else has gone careful.

Then the LORD will take me up

David writes a line that sounds harsh until you notice it is not an accusation.

When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up. (Psalm 27:10, King James Version)

He is not calling his parents wicked. Forsake there does not require malice. It covers every way in which the nearest people run out, including the ways they run out while trying their best.

And then the word then. When they run out, then. Not instead of. Not because they failed. When their supply ends, another one begins.

You have a supply that begins where theirs runs out, and it has never once been withheld because the people nearest you did their best. Psalm 27 puts the taking up immediately after the running out, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a handover like that noticeable at an ordinary dinner.

And read the verb. Take me up. It is the word for lifting a child, gathering somebody in. Not tolerate, not manage, not handle carefully around a subject.

You are being gathered in rather than handled carefully, and God has never once arranged Himself around a subject to protect you. The Spirit of God is the one who makes that difference land in a woman who has been handled gently for years, and the written word says then the LORD will take me up.

The one voice that never went quiet

Now the part I came to say.

Everybody at that table stopped speaking about it. God did not. That is the whole of what I came with, and it is worth sitting still for.

He has not gone tactful. He has not decided the case is closed. There has been no half second pause anywhere in heaven, no changing of the subject, no arranging around you. The conversation about you has continued at full volume the whole time your family has been being careful.

You are still being spoken about, and there has never once been a pause in it. The written word says the LORD will take me up, which is God moving toward somebody rather than around them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ongoing conversation audible over a quiet room.

And here is what that does to the table. It does not fix your family and it does not require you to confront anybody. It just means the silence at that table is a local weather condition rather than a report on your situation.

You have a situation that is not described by that silence, and no quiet room has ever once been the final word on anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a room local instead of total, and Psalm 27:10 is the written word underneath it, where the nearest people run out and somebody else picks the person up.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody reading this.

You are still being spoken about at full volume, and nothing in heaven has ever once gone tactful concerning you. I am not decorating that. Psalm 27:10 says then the LORD will take me up, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes a line like that off a page and puts it at a family table on a Sunday.

And then this, which is the word I came with.

You have been gathered in rather than managed, and no case about you has ever once been closed by anybody who loves you. The Spirit of God is the one who lifts a person in a room where everyone else has gone quiet, and the passage is the written word underneath it, where the nearest people run out and the taking up begins in the same breath.

You do not have to raise it with them today. That was never the assignment. Somebody has not stopped talking about you.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Silence that arrives at that table, you are not a report on my life. Psalm 27:10 says then the LORD will take me up, so by the Holy Spirit you speak for nobody, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Case my own family quietly closed, you have no authority to close anything. The word says when my father and my mother forsake me, and by the Spirit of God I am done reading a kind room as a verdict.
  3. Father, You never stopped speaking about me. Your word says You take me up when the nearest people run out, so by Your Spirit I sit down at that table today, and then I put the kettle on.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
