Resting or Giving Up

You have lost the ability to tell them apart, and that is a serious loss.

An afternoon on the couch used to be an afternoon on the couch. Now it is a question. Is this rest, which is legitimate and which I need, or is this the beginning of the ending, which is what it looked like the last four times.

So you cannot rest, because resting might be quitting. And you cannot go on the way you have been going, because nobody can. So you occupy a narrow strip in between, moving but not well, stopping but not really, and the strip gets narrower every year.

Here is why the confusion happened, and it is not your fault. The last several times it ended, it ended in something that looked exactly like rest. There was no dramatic collapse. There was an afternoon off, and then another one, and then it was over. So rest has become the crime scene, and you have been treating your own need for it as the early warning sign of your own failure.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. You have driven yourself for years and you have gotten up after every ending, and the fact that you cannot rest now is not laziness in disguise, it is the opposite. It is a person who has been so unwilling to stop that they have lost their own permission to.

So this page will not ask you to push through anything, and it will not name a day for you to begin again.

I want to give you back the difference between two things, and I want to do it out of a passage where Jesus does the same for people who were doing good work.

Rest was not the cause of the ending

Look carefully at what happened those other times, because the sequence has been misread.

The afternoon off did not cause the ending. The ending was already happening, and it had been happening for weeks, in the form of an exhaustion nobody was allowed to name. The afternoon was where the exhaustion finally surfaced. You have been treating the moment the water came through the ceiling as the leak.

You have been prosecuting the wrong event, and rest has never once been the thing that ended anything for you. Mark 6:31 has Jesus say come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can make a command to stop feel like permission rather than like danger.

And notice what the misreading has cost. It has removed the only available repair. If rest is suspect, then the one thing that would have restored you has been reclassified as a threat, and you have been left with nothing at all to do about being tired except continue.

You are not being offered a threat when you are offered rest, and no need of yours has ever once been the early sign of a failure. The written word has Jesus issue the instruction Himself to men who had just come back from real work, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an instruction like that safe to obey.

Come ye yourselves apart

Read the setting, because the setting is what makes this useful.

And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. (Mark 6:31, King James Version)

The disciples have just come back from being sent out. They have been working, and it went well, and they are reporting on it.

And His response is not more instruction and it is not commendation. It is: come away and rest. He is the one who says it. It is not a concession He grants under pressure, it is His own initiative, issued to people in the middle of doing exactly what He asked them to do.

You are being called apart by the one person who has never once mistaken tiredness for weakness. Mark 6 has Jesus interrupt effective work with an instruction to rest, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that interruption land as care rather than as criticism.

And note the reason He gives. There were many coming and going and they had no leisure so much as to eat. That is a description of conditions, not of character. He is not saying you have failed. He is saying the conditions have been like this and therefore rest.

You have conditions rather than a character problem, and Jesus has never once diagnosed exhaustion as a fault. The Spirit of God is the one who tells a person which of those two they are looking at, and the written word says come ye yourselves apart, and rest a while.

How to tell the difference

Now the part I came to say, and it is practical.

There is a way to tell them apart, and it is not a feeling and it is not a duration. Giving up is a decision about the future. Rest is a decision about today. That is the whole difference and it is completely reliable.

When you sit down and there is a sentence attached that says, and I am not doing this any more, that is a decision about the future. When you sit down and there is nothing attached to it, no verdict about next week, no announcement, just an afternoon, that is rest. It does not matter how long it lasts or how it feels.

You are able to tell which one you are in, and it has never once required you to inspect your own motives. The written word has Jesus name a desert place and a while, both of which are limits on scope rather than on comfort, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a rest from acquiring a sentence about the future.

And here is the freeing part. Because the test is about the future rather than about the resting, you can sit down today without settling anything. No decision is being made. Nothing is being concluded about you by anybody, least of all by the one who told you to come away in the first place.

You have permission to sit down without concluding anything, and no afternoon has ever once been a verdict on a life. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a day from a decision, and Mark 6:31 is the written word underneath it, where the rest is His idea and comes with a limit and no accusation.
