You used to tell people. You do not any more, and you know exactly why.
The telling used to feel like commitment. Now it feels like scheduling an audience for the ending. So you have gone quiet about it, entirely, and nobody in your life knows that anything is going on at all, and the quiet has a strange double quality to it. It is safer. And it is lonelier than anybody watching would guess.
The safety is real. If nobody knows, nobody sees it stop. There is no moment when somebody asks how it is going and you have to arrange your face. There is no gentle change of subject at a table.
The loneliness is also real, and it costs more than the safety saves, which you have suspected for a while.
Let me put the plain thing first, because it belongs first. You have not been careless with this. Going quiet was not giving up, it was self-protection, and it was intelligent, and you have gone on trying inside that quiet in ways nobody has ever seen. You have gotten up again more times than anybody has any idea about, precisely because nobody has any idea about it.
So this page will not ask you to tell somebody. There is no accountability here and no next Monday and no plan.
What I want to tell you is that the quiet was never as empty as it has felt.
What the silence actually costs
Look at what went out of the room when the telling stopped.
It was not the accountability, because the accountability was never real. What went out was witness. Not somebody checking on you. Somebody knowing. Those are different things, and the loss of the second one has been mistaken for the price of safety, when it is actually the whole cost.
You have been paying for safety with witness, and no arrangement like that has ever once been a fair exchange. Psalm 56:8 says thou tellest my wanderings, put thou my tears into thy bottle, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that stop being poetry and start being company.
And here is the part that keeps it in place. Once nobody knows, there is nothing to interrupt the version of events that lives in your own head. There is no other person carrying a different account of you. So the account goes unchallenged, and it becomes the record, and the record is harsher than any real witness would have been.
You have been the sole keeper of a very harsh account, and no honest witness has ever once been that severe with you. The written word says God tells the wanderings and keeps the tears, which is a second account being kept by somebody who is for you, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a second account audible.
Thou tellest my wanderings
David writes a line that is strange enough to stop you.
Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? (Psalm 56:8, King James Version)
Tellest means counts. God counts the wanderings.
Not the arrivals. Not the successes. The wanderings, which is the word for the aimless part, the going in circles, the seasons where nothing was achieved and nobody was told anything.
You are being counted through the wandering seasons, and there has never once been a stretch of your life that went unrecorded because nothing came of it. Psalm 56 is the written word where the wandering is what gets counted, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a comfort rather than a surveillance report.
And then the bottle, which is the image that undoes people. Tears collected and kept. That is not the behavior of an observer. That is the behavior of somebody who intends to keep what came out of you when nobody was looking.
You have been wept over into a bottle, and not one of those private nights has ever once been discarded. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an image like that land in a woman's chest, and the written word asks are they not in thy book, as though the answer were obvious.
The quiet was never empty
Now the part I came to say.
You chose the quiet to avoid an audience. What you did not know, and could not have known, is that the quiet was already occupied. Every one of the attempts nobody heard about was witnessed. Every evening you got up and did the thing and told no one is in a book. The seasons of going in circles, the ones that produced nothing anybody could point to, were counted.
That is not a consolation prize for the loneliness. It is a correction to the premise. The room was never empty.
You are not alone in the quiet, and there has never once been a private season of yours that went unattended. The written word says thou tellest my wanderings and puts the tears in a bottle, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an occupied room feel occupied.
And here is what that changes about the ending you are bracing for. There is nobody to disappoint. The one witness in the room already knows how the previous ones went, kept the record Himself, and is still counting.
You have a witness who has watched every ending and has never once revised His opinion of you. The Spirit of God is the one who makes that reliable rather than merely hopeful, and Psalm 56:8 is the written word underneath it, where the wanderings are told and the tears are kept and the book is already open.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody reading this.
You are witnessed in the quiet, and it has never once been the empty room it felt like. I am not decorating that. Psalm 56:8 says thou tellest my wanderings, put thou my tears into thy bottle, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes a line like that off a page and puts it in a kitchen where nobody has been told anything for years.
And then this, which is the word I came with.
You have every wandering season counted by somebody who is for you, and not one of them has ever once been written off. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a second account audible over the harsh one, and the passage is the written word underneath it, where the tears are collected and the book is already open and the question is asked as though the answer were obvious.
You do not have to tell anybody today. That was never the assignment. The quiet was occupied the whole time.
Declare this over yourself
- Silence I chose so nobody would be watching, you are not an empty room. Psalm 56:8 says thou tellest my wanderings, so by the Holy Spirit you hide me from nobody, in the name of Jesus.
- Harsh account nobody has ever challenged, you have no standing. The word says put thou my tears into thy bottle, and by the Spirit of God I am done being the only one keeping a record of myself.
- Father, You count my wanderings and You keep my tears. Your word asks are they not in Thy book, so by Your Spirit I say it out loud in this room today, and then I go on with what I was doing.
Psalm 56:8
