I Told Everybody Last Time

The worst part was never the stopping. It was the people who knew.

You told them at the time because telling felt like commitment. That is what everybody says. Announce it and you will be accountable. So you told your brother, and the man at work who always asks, and one time you said something at a table with eight people at it, which you have thought about since more often than you would admit.

And then it stopped, the way it stops, not with a decision but with an ordinary week that turned into an ordinary month. And nobody said anything, because they are decent people. And their not saying anything was the loudest thing that happened that year.

So now the thought of beginning brings the thought of telling, and the thought of telling brings that table, and the whole thing dies before it gets anywhere near a decision.

Let me say the plain thing at the top, because it is true and it usually goes unsaid. You have not been careless about any of this. You have taken it seriously enough to tell people, which is more exposure than most men will accept about anything, and you have gotten up afterward and gone on being reliable for everybody around you. A man who did not care would never have announced anything.

So this page is not asking you to try again and it is not asking you to tell anybody. There is no next Monday in here and there is nobody for you to report to.

What I want to show you is a verse where Jesus makes secrecy the instruction rather than the compromise.

Why the announcement was never the accountability

Consider what actually happens when a man announces something.

He does not acquire accountability. He acquires an audience. And an audience is not a support structure, it is a gallery, and a gallery changes the nature of the thing being attempted. What began as a private matter between a man and his own life is now a performance with witnesses, and every witness is a potential judge whether they ever say a word or not.

You have been carrying an audience that was assembled by your own announcements, and no gallery has ever once been the same thing as help. Matthew 6:6 says pray to thy Father which is in secret, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes privacy sound like intimacy rather than like hiding.

And notice the shape of the injury. It was not that they mocked you. Almost nobody mocks anybody. It was the silence, the tact, the kind changing of the subject, and tact is worse than mockery because you cannot argue with it and you cannot ask it to stop.

You were wounded by kindness that had nowhere to go, and there has never once been a way to answer a room that is being tactful. The written word puts the whole transaction between a man and his Father with the door shut, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a witness out of a room that never needed one.

Shut thy door

Jesus is talking about prayer, but He is talking about a principle that runs wider than prayer.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. (Matthew 6:6, King James Version)

Shut the door. That is not a concession to shyness. It is the instruction.

And read the reason underneath it in the verses around it: the moment other people are watching, the watching becomes the reward, and the thing collapses into performance. Jesus is not protecting God's dignity there. He is protecting the man.

You are being protected rather than fenced in, and a shut door has never once been the same thing as concealment. Matthew 6 makes secrecy the setting rather than the failure, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a closed door feel like company instead of isolation.

And there is a witness in that verse. There is exactly one. Thy Father which seeth in secret. So the choice was never between being watched and being alone. It is between a gallery and a Father.

You have one witness and He is not in the gallery, and there has never once been a moment in that closet when nobody was there. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a room with the door shut feel occupied, and the written word says thy Father which seeth in secret, which is a sentence about presence and not surveillance.

Nothing has to be said to anybody

Now the part I came to say, and it is going to feel like permission nobody offered before now.

You never have to tell another person anything about this. Not this week, not ever. There is no verse requiring disclosure, no principle demanding a public commitment, and no spiritual value whatsoever in an announcement. The whole architecture of telling people came from somewhere else entirely, and it has cost you more than it has ever returned.

You are free to say nothing to anyone, and God has never once required a man to make a declaration to a room. The written word says shut thy door, which is Jesus removing an audience on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes silence a place rather than a hiding.

And here is what makes that safe rather than lonely. Secret does not mean unwitnessed. It means the witness is the only one who was ever qualified to be there. Everything about you that has been done in the quiet, including the years nobody saw, has been in front of somebody the whole time.

You have been seen in every quiet year, and not one of them has ever once gone unwitnessed. The Spirit of God is the one who makes that a comfort rather than a caution, and Matthew 6:6 is the written word underneath it, where the Father who sees in secret is the one doing the rewarding.
