Strength Was Only Ever a Metaphor

You have read that word a thousand times and never once thought of your hands.

Strength, in your Bible, has always meant something interior. Fortitude. Endurance under pressure. The capacity to keep believing when things are hard. All of which is real, and all of which is in the text, and none of which involves a body.

So there is a word that appears everywhere in Scripture, that you have read attentively for decades, and it has never once landed anywhere near your actual arms.

That is not a small omission. It means an entire dimension of a very common biblical word has been closed to you, and closed so thoroughly that it has never occurred to you that it was closed.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. You have read your Bible for years and you have gone at the body question repeatedly and got up after each attempt. Somebody who did not care would not have read the word attentively at all.

So this page is not going to give you a program. Nothing here is a plan and there is not going to be one.

I want to show you a verse where strength is handed to people at a specific moment, on a specific day, and what they do next is physical.

A word with a closed half

Consider what happens when a word only ever arrives in one register.

Strength in Scripture covers both. It covers what a man endures with and it covers what a man lifts with, and the Hebrew does not separate them nearly as cleanly as most sermons do. But every sermon on that word seems to go interior, and so the other half has stayed shut.

And a closed half is not the same as an absent half. It is there in the text every time, and it has been read past every time.

You have been reading past half of a word, and no closed half of a text has ever once stopped being there. Nehemiah 8:10 says the joy of the LORD is your strength, and the Holy Spirit is the one who opens a half of a word that decades of reading kept shut.

And notice what the interior-only reading has cost. It has meant that every promise about strength in your Bible has been filed as being about your mind, which means your body has been excluded from an entire category of God's provision without anybody ever deciding that.

You have had a category of provision closed to your own hands, and no exclusion like that has ever once been written anywhere. The written word says the joy of the LORD is your strength, said on a day when people were physically exhausted, and the Spirit of God is the one who puts a promise back where it was aimed.

The joy of the LORD is your strength

Read where the line sits, because the setting is not interior at all.

Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength. (Nehemiah 8:10, King James Version)

Look at what the sentence is attached to. Go your way. Eat. Drink. Send portions to people who have nothing prepared.

That is a set of physical instructions involving food and delivery and other people's houses, and the joy of the LORD is your strength is the reason given for being able to do them.

You have that line attached to physical instructions, and it has never once been a sentence about a mood. Nehemiah 8 puts eating and carrying and sending in the same breath as the strength, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the setting of a famous line visible again.

And read who is being spoken to. People who had been standing and listening and weeping since morning. They are physically wrung out, and what they are told is not to rally internally. They are told to go and eat and carry things to other houses.

You are being sent to do something rather than to feel something, and no strength in that verse has ever once stayed inside a man. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a promise out of a mood and into a pair of hands, and the written word says go your way, eat and drink, and send portions to other houses.

Do one thing with your hands

Now the part I came to say, and it belongs in your hands rather than your head.

Do one thing with your hands today that takes strength. Not a routine, not a duration, not a start.

Something with weight in it. Carry a load in one trip. Move a piece of furniture. Split something. Dig. Take a box up the stairs for somebody. Whatever is genuinely available.

You are able to do something with your hands today, and no strength has ever once been given to a man to be kept internal. The written word attaches the joy of the LORD being your strength directly to eating and carrying and sending, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a physical instruction feel like the actual meaning.

And here is why one act does what a study could not. You have already read the word a thousand times. What has never happened is the word arriving while your hands were doing something. Do the thing, say the line while you are doing it, and it lands in a place your reading has never been able to reach.

You have a place in you the reading has never reached, and no amount of study has ever once got there. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an old line arrive in a pair of arms, and Nehemiah 8:10 is the written word underneath it, where the joy of the LORD is the strength and the instruction that follows is to go and eat and carry.
