Tired in a Way Sleep Does Not Touch

You are not hungry and you are not sad. You have checked.

That is what makes this so difficult to talk about, and it is why the ordinary explanations do not fit. You are not eating your feelings, because you have gone looking for the feelings and there are not any in particular. And you are not hungry, and you know the difference.

What you are is tired. But not the kind that sleep fixes, because you have slept and it is still there in the morning, and it was there before you were tired in the ordinary sense, and it will be there next week.

There is a tiredness underneath the tiredness, and nobody has ever given you a word for it, so you have been treating it as a personal defect rather than as a condition with a name.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. You have gone at it for years, in ways nobody has any idea about, and you have gotten up every morning anyway. Somebody who did not care would sleep fine.

So this page will not tell you to rest more. You have tried resting and it does not reach it.

I want to give you the word for it, and it is in the Bible, and God addresses it directly.

Two kinds of tired

Consider the difference, because until it is named it cannot be dealt with.

There is body tired. Body tired responds to sleep. It is honest and simple and it gets better overnight, and everybody understands it.

Then there is the other one, which is not in the body at all, and which sleep passes straight through. It is what is left when the day is over and the rest has been had and something in you is still worn. Old, patient, quiet tiredness that has been there so long you have stopped noticing it as separate from yourself.

You have two tirednesses and only one of them was ever going to answer to sleep, and no night has ever once been able to reach the other. Jeremiah 31:25 says I have satiated the weary soul, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a promise about a weary soul recognizable to somebody who has only had words for a weary body.

And notice why the kitchen gets involved. When something in you is worn and sleep has not touched it, the mind goes looking for anything that produces even a moment of relief, and eating produces a moment of it. That is not a character flaw. That is a person with an unaddressed condition reaching for the only thing on the shelf.

You have been reaching for the only thing available, and no unaddressed weariness has ever once been a moral failure. The written word names a weary soul as a category God attends to directly, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a condition feel like a condition rather than a fault.

I have satiated the weary soul

Jeremiah writes it as something already done.

For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul. (Jeremiah 31:25, King James Version)

The weary soul. Not the weary body. He names the exact thing that has never had a word in this house, and He names it as a category He deals with.

And read the tense. I have satiated. Past tense. Already done. He does not say I will attend to it when you have rested properly and cleared the rest of your life up.

You have a weariness God has already addressed, and it has never once been waiting on you to be in better order first. Jeremiah 31 uses the past tense on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a finished thing feel available now rather than pending.

And notice the word satiated, which is a word about fullness. He does not say relieved or reduced. Satiated is what happens at the end of a meal, and Jeremiah applies it to a soul.

You are satisfied at the level where the tiredness actually lives, and no relief has ever once had to be found on a shelf. The Spirit of God is the one who makes satisfaction possible somewhere other than in a kitchen, and the written word says I have satiated the weary soul.

Name the kind of tired

Now the part I came to say, and it is a naming rather than a remedy.

Say out loud what kind of tired it is. Not the bare word tired, which has been said in this house a thousand times. What kind. Soul tired. Old tired. Tired underneath. Whatever the honest word is.

You have never done that, and the reason it matters is that an unnamed condition has nowhere to go, so it goes to the nearest available comfort every single time.

You have a condition with a name available, and no unnamed thing has ever once been able to be handed to anybody. The written word names the weary soul directly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a naming like that possible out loud in an ordinary room.

And here is why the naming is enough for today. It does not fix the tiredness. Nothing on this page fixes anything. What it does is take the thing out of the category of personal defect and put it in the category of a condition God has already said He attends to, and that changes what the evening is about.

You are not carrying a defect tonight, and no weariness of yours has ever once been a verdict on your character. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a thing out of one category and into another, and Jeremiah 31:25 is the written word underneath it, where the weary soul is satiated and the sorrowful soul is replenished and both of them are named.
