The One Part of the Day That Is Mine

It is not really about food. You have suspected that for a long time.

What you notice, if you are honest about the moment, is that what you are reaching for is the part of the day when nothing is being asked of you. And there is only one of those. And it is late, and it is short, and it happens to have food in it because food is what is available at that hour and because eating is the only activity in your life that nobody interrupts.

That is the whole mechanism. Not appetite. Amnesty.

And once you see it that way, something else becomes obvious: you have been trying to solve a rest problem in the kitchen, and you have been failing at it, because a kitchen was never going to be able to supply what you were actually asking for.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. You have gone at it for years, in ways nobody in your house has any idea about, and you have gotten up every morning and given the whole day away again. Somebody who did not care would not need the amnesty.

So this page will not give you a rule about that hour, or a substitute for anything, or a way to hold out. There is no strategy on this site and there is not going to be one.

I want to show you a verse where the offer is rest and the requirement is nothing at all.

An amnesty, not an appetite

Consider what the hour actually gives you, because it is not pleasure.

Nobody describes that hour as enjoyable. What people describe, when they are honest, is relief. And relief is what you feel at the end of a demand, not the middle of a pleasure. So the hour is functioning as an amnesty: a window in which nobody is going to want anything, and in which you are briefly not on duty.

You have been reaching for an amnesty rather than for an appetite, and no kitchen has ever once been able to supply what that hour was actually asking for. Matthew 11:28 says come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an offer of rest land on somebody who has only ever found a version of it late at night.

And notice how little of the day is yours. Go through it honestly. Almost every hour has somebody in it who needs something, and the ones that do not are spent preparing for the ones that do. One hour at the end, unsupervised, is not indulgence. It is the entire allocation.

You have one hour in a whole day and it has never once been indulgence, and nobody has ever once given you a second one. The written word says come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an invitation like that arrive as an actual offer rather than a nice sentence.

Come unto me

Jesus makes the offer to a specific group, and the group is described by their condition.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28, King James Version)

All that labor and are heavy laden. That is the qualification. Not all that have their affairs in order. Not all that have earned an hour.

And what is offered is rest, which is exactly what you have been trying to obtain in a kitchen late at night with the refrigerator door open.

You are qualified by the condition you are already in, and no offer of rest has ever once required a person to be in better shape first. Matthew 11 names the tired and the loaded as the ones addressed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a qualification like that recognizable to somebody who assumes she has to hold out longer.

And read the verb. I will give you rest. Given, not achieved. There is no method in that verse, no technique, no discipline. There is a come and there is a give.

You have rest as something given and it has never once been something to obtain. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a gift feel like a gift to somebody who has been trying to manufacture the same thing at midnight, and the written word says I will give you rest.

Take a piece of the day and do nothing in it

Now the part I came to say, and it is not about the evening at all.

Take a piece of the day, while it is still light, where nobody needs anything from you, and do nothing in it. Not a task, not a productive rest, not a walk with a purpose. Nothing.

That will feel much harder than it sounds, and the difficulty is the evidence: a person who has one hour of amnesty in a day has forgotten that she is allowed any.

You are allowed an hour that nobody assigned you, and no permission has ever once been withheld from somebody Jesus called to come. The written word says come unto me and I will give you rest, which is an offer available at any hour rather than only the last one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes daytime rest possible for somebody who has only ever taken it in the dark.

And here is why moving it earlier changes the evening. The evening hour is doing the work of a whole day's rest, which is far more than one hour can hold, and it collapses under the weight of it every night. Nothing about the evening needs to be resisted. It needs to stop being the only one.

You are not resisting anything tonight, and the evening has never once been the problem it was made to look like. The Spirit of God is the one who takes a load off an hour rather than off a person, and Matthew 11:28 is the written word underneath it, where the ones addressed are already tired and the rest is given rather than gained.
