The List I Make in the Mirror

The list starts before you have finished looking.

That is the thing nobody outside this understands. They think the problem is that you look in a mirror and feel bad. It is much more organized than that. You look, and within about a second and a half an itemized list assembles itself, in order, with the most urgent item at the top, and it is the same list it was last week, and you know it so well you could recite it.

And underneath the list is a sentence, and the sentence is the actual problem. It goes something like this: when these are dealt with, I will be able to stand here.

That is the arrangement you have been living under. Peace is real, peace is available, and peace is at the far end of a list. Which means every day you wake up at the near end of it.

Let me put the true thing first, because it usually never gets said. You have not been slack about any of this. You have worked at it for years. You have tried things that helped for a while and things that did nothing, and you have gotten back up more times than anybody who has never had this fight could count. A list that detailed is not the work of somebody who does not care. It is the work of somebody who has cared so much, for so long, that the caring built an inventory.

So I am not going to ask you to cross anything off the list. And I am not going to tell you the list is wrong, because you have eyes and you can see and I am not here to argue with what you see.

I want to do something else. I want to show you who else has read it.

A list is a delay, not a plan

Here is what a list like that actually does, and it is not what it advertises.

It advertises itself as a plan. It presents as organized, sensible, honest. What it actually functions as is a delay. As long as there are items, there is a reason peace has not arrived yet, and the reason is not that peace was withheld. The reason is that you are still working. That feels better than the alternative, which is that peace was available all along and you did not take it.

You are not being held at a distance by an unfinished list, and there has never once been an item on it that was standing between you and God. Psalm 103:14 says He knoweth our frame, He remembereth that we are dust, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a sentence like that a relief rather than a piece of information.

And notice what the list quietly assumes. It assumes that when you look in the mirror you are seeing something God has not yet been shown. That the inventory is news. That somewhere in heaven there is a version of you being worked from, and your job is to keep it updated.

You have nothing to report, and no list you ever made has once told God something He had to be brought up to date on. The written word says He knows what we are made of and remembers it, which is a description of somebody who has already read all of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes the reporting job off a woman's shoulders.

He knoweth our frame

The psalm is not being poetic when it says this. It is being medical about the soul.

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. (Psalm 103:13-14, King James Version)

He knows our frame. Not our potential. Not the version of us that is coming. Our frame, which is the actual construction, the thing we are made of, dust and all.

And read what that knowledge produces in Him. Not correction. Pity, in the old strong sense of the word, the way a father looks at a small child who is trying to carry something too heavy. Tenderness caused by accurate knowledge.

You are known accurately and the accuracy produced tenderness, and nothing about your frame has ever once produced impatience in God. Psalm 103 puts the knowing and the pitying in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that from being read as condescension.

That is the reversal, and it is the reason this page will not become an assignment. Everything else you have been handed said: here is the list, get it done, and then rest. The psalm says: He already knows the whole frame, and the knowing is why He is gentle.

You have been dealt with by somebody who already read the list, and His gentleness was never once conditional on the length of it. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an old psalm land in a bathroom in the morning, and the written word says He remembereth that we are dust, said as a comfort and not as a diagnosis.

The list will not end, and that is not a tragedy

Now the thing I most want you to hear, because it is the part that sets somebody free.

The list has no end. That is not pessimism, it is arithmetic. Every item ever cleared off it has been replaced. You know this. Things came off and the list stayed the same length, because the list is not generated by your body. It is generated by the machine that makes lists, and that machine has been running for decades and it does not run out of material.

Which means the arrangement you have been living under was never going to pay out. Peace at the end of the list is peace in a place the list does not have.

You were never going to arrive at the end of it, and peace has never once been stored at an address like that. The written word says He knoweth our frame, which is God settling the question before the list was ever written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves peace from the end of an inventory into a Tuesday morning.

So the good news is not that you are going to finish. It is that finishing was never the door. Somebody has read the whole list, including the items you have not thought of yet, and the reading did not change anything about how you are held.

You are held today at the near end of the list, and the holding has never once depended on progress. The Spirit of God is the one who makes that stop being a nice idea, and Psalm 103 is the written word underneath it, where a father pities his children because he knows exactly what they are made of.
