There is a room in your house that you have decided is the honest one.
Every other mirror in the place is flattering you. The one in the hallway is too dim to be trusted. The one in the bedroom catches the window and softens everything. But there is one room, and you know exactly which one it is, where the light comes straight down from the ceiling and shows you what is really there. And you have organized a great deal of your life around not standing under it for very long.
I want to say something before anything else, because it needs saying first and it usually gets said last, or not at all.
You did not get here through carelessness. You have thought about this more carefully than most people think about anything. You have tried things. You have tried things that worked for a while and things that did not work at all, and you have gotten back up more times than anybody who has never had this fight would believe. Nobody arrives at a private theory about which light in their own home is the truthful one without decades of paying close attention. That is not carelessness. That is a person who has been watching herself for a very long time.
So I am not here to talk you out of what you see under that light. I am not going to tell you it is not really like that, and I am not going to hand you a better way of looking, and I am certainly not going to ask you to stand there and find something you like. That is the advice everybody gives and it does not work, and the reason it does not work is that it puts the whole job back on the one person in the room who is already exhausted.
What I want to do is much smaller and much better. I want to tell you who else is in that room, and what the light is doing to Him.
The room you appointed as the judge
Here is what is actually happening when you decide that one room tells the truth.
You are not measuring light. You are choosing a verdict and then choosing the courtroom most likely to deliver it. The dim hallway is dismissed as unreliable, not because the physics are wrong, but because the answer it gives is the kind one, and you have learned not to trust kind answers about yourself. So the harshest report gets promoted to the status of fact, and every gentler report gets filed as a lie.
You are not standing under a lamp that has authority over you, and the harshest report in your house has never once been the true one. Psalm 139:12 says the darkness and the light are both alike to Him, which means the room where you go to be told off does not tell God anything He did not already know somewhere gentler, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land as relief rather than as information.
There is something else in that habit, and it is worth naming plainly. Choosing the harsh room is a way of getting there first. If you say the worst thing about yourself before anybody else can, then nobody can hurt you with it. It is armor. It has kept you upright for years and it has cost you every ordinary moment in your own hallway.
You were doing something intelligent, and it has never once been necessary in front of God. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the armor off a person without leaving them defenseless, and Psalm 139 is the passage where somebody discovers he was searched and known long before he decided to confess.
What the psalm actually says about light
David is writing about being seen, and he pushes it as far as it will go. He goes up, he goes down, he goes to the far side of the sea, and then he tries the last hiding place anybody tries.
He tries the dark.
If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. (Psalm 139:11-12, King James Version)
Both alike to Thee.
Read that as somebody who has a favorite mirror and a feared one. Both alike. The dim hallway and the overhead light in that room are the same document to God. He is not getting extra information under the harsh one. He is not seeing something in there that the rest of the house was hiding from Him.
You have no room in your house where God learns something new about you, and there is no lamp anywhere that has ever changed His expression. That is not my encouragement, that is Psalm 139:12, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a verse about the dark into something a woman can carry into a lit room.
And notice which way the psalm runs. David is not saying the dark is safe. He is saying the dark was never a hiding place because the One looking is not looking with eyes that need help.
He is not squinting to be kind
This is the part I most want you to hear, because it is where most of us quietly settle for something smaller than the truth.
Most people who have made peace with being loved by God have made it on the assumption that He is being generous. That He looks and sees roughly what that overhead light sees, and decides to be gracious about it. Kindness as a decision made against the evidence. Mercy as a squint.
It is not that. It has never been that.
You are not being loved in spite of what is in that room, and the kindness you have been receiving was never a decision made with the eyes half closed. The Spirit of God is the one who says this to a person rather than about a person, and Psalm 139 is where it is written down: not that God overlooks, but that light and dark are alike to Him, which is a sentence about the quality of His sight and not the softness of His heart.
The reason that matters is simple. A God who is being nice about you can change His mind when He looks more carefully. A God for whom every light is the same light has nothing left to discover.
You have already been seen all the way through, and the looking is finished and the verdict came back kind. The written word says the night shines as the day to Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that from being a threat.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody reading this.
You are seen completely and you are not being winced at, and that is true under every light in your house. I am not decorating this. The passage says the night shines as the day to Him, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes a line like that off a page and puts it in a bathroom.
And then this one, which is the word I came with.
You have been looked at all the way to the bottom, and what came back was not a correction. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an old sentence new in somebody's actual house, and Psalm 139 is the written word where a man goes looking for a dark place to hide and finds out there was never one, and is glad.
You do not have to like that room today. That was never the assignment. Somebody else is standing in it and He is not doing the thing you have braced for.
Declare this over yourself
- Light in that room, you are not the judge of me. Psalm 139:12 says the darkness and the light are both alike to God, so by the Holy Spirit you hold no court in this house, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that the honest room is the harsh one, you have no evidence left. The word says the night shines as the day to Him, and by the Spirit of God I am done promoting the worst report in my house to the truth.
- Father, You see me under every light and You are not wincing. Your word says both are alike to You, so by Your Spirit I stand in that room today, and I leave the light on when I go.
