You have never lived an ordinary Tuesday. Not one.
You have passed through thousands of them. You have got through them, worked them, endured them, and moved them behind you. But you have not lived one, because living one would require being in it, and you have not been in a day for a very long time.
You have been in the other one. The one where this is dealt with. You know the day I mean: it has no date on it, it is always somewhere ahead, and the man in it is the version of you that does not have this going on.
That man has had all your attention for decades. Every Tuesday you have ever had was a corridor to get to him through, and corridors are not lived in, they are walked down.
Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. Every one of those corridors was walked with real effort, and you got up and walked the next one every time. Somebody who did not care would have stopped walking.
So this page is not going to promise you the other day. It is not coming and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
I want to hand you this one instead, and there is a verse about it.
A corridor is not a room
Consider what the arrangement has actually cost, because it is not obvious from inside it.
It has not cost effort. Enormous effort has gone into it. It has cost every ordinary thing that happened while nobody was present for it. The meals, the drives, the conversations at the door, the light in a kitchen in October. All of it happened, and the man it happened to was in a corridor.
That is not a small bill. It is most of a life, paid out in a currency nobody counts.
You have been paying in a currency nobody counts, and no corridor has ever once been a place anybody lived. Psalm 118:24 says this is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a verse about a specific day arrive on a man who has spent his life in another one.
And notice what keeps the corridor going. It is not stupidity and it is not avoidance. It is that the other day genuinely would be better, and a man aiming at a better thing looks exactly like a man doing the right thing, which is why nobody has ever questioned it, including you.
You have been doing something that looks correct from every angle, and no aim at a better day has ever once been the same thing as living one. The written word says this is the day which the LORD hath made, with the word this doing all the work, and the Spirit of God is the one who puts a demonstrative pronoun into a man's actual Tuesday.
This is the day
The psalm is short and the important word in it is the smallest one.
This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24, King James Version)
This. Not a day. Not one day. This one, the one in progress, the one with the weather it has and the obligations it has and the version of you in it that you would not have chosen.
And then hath made. Past tense. It is already made, which means it has been finished and delivered, and the making of it is not waiting on anything.
You have a day that is already made and delivered, and no day of yours has ever once been waiting on something to become livable. Psalm 118 uses the demonstrative and the past tense together, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes both of those land in a Tuesday rather than in a sermon.
And read the response given. We will rejoice and be glad in it. In it. Not about what it leads to. The gladness is located inside the day rather than at the end of the corridor.
You are given somewhere to be glad that is inside the day, and no gladness has ever once been stored at the far end of anything. The Spirit of God is the one who relocates a man's gladness from a future room into a present one, and the written word says we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Do one ordinary thing slowly
Now the part I came to say, and slowly is the whole instruction.
Do one ordinary thing today, slowly. Not a special thing. An ordinary one. Drink the coffee sitting down rather than in the truck. Eat the sandwich without doing anything else. Walk to the mailbox at a walking pace.
Slowly is what breaks a corridor, because a corridor is defined by transit, and transit cannot be done slowly without stopping being transit.
You are able to break a corridor with one slow ordinary act, and no day has ever once stayed a corridor once somebody stood still in it. The written word says this is the day which the LORD hath made, which locates a man in a specific one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes standing still in it possible.
And here is why one is enough, because you will want to make it a practice and that is the corridor talking. One slow ordinary act today is a day partly lived. Two days from now is not your business and nothing here requires it.
You have one day in your hands and it has never once been an installment on another one. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a single day sufficient without a series attached, and Psalm 118:24 is the written word underneath it, where the day is this one, it is already made, and the gladness is inside it.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man reading this.
You have a day that is already made and delivered, and no day of yours has once been waiting to become livable. I am not decorating that. Psalm 118:24 says this is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes a line like that off a page and puts it in a truck at lunchtime.
And then this, which is the word I came with.
You are given somewhere to be glad that is inside the day, and no gladness has ever once been stored at the far end of a corridor. The Spirit of God is the one who relocates a man's gladness from a future room into a present one, and the passage is the written word underneath it, where the word is this and the making is already finished.
You do not have to give up on the other day today. That was never the assignment. Live a bit of this one.
Declare this over yourself
- Version of me that lives in the day after this is dealt with, you are not the man doing today. Psalm 118:24 says this is the day which the LORD hath made, so by the Holy Spirit you take no more of my Tuesdays, in the name of Jesus.
- Corridor I have been walking down for decades, you were never a room. The word says we will rejoice and be glad in it, and by the Spirit of God I am done paying out a life in a currency nobody counts.
- Father, this is the day I was given and there is no other one coming. Your word says the LORD hath made it, so by Your Spirit I do one ordinary thing slowly today, and then I get on with the afternoon.
