What They SaidIsaiah 49:16

Said Lightly at the Table

This message is for the reader carrying a sentence a parent said at a kitchen table when she was a child, said lightly, laughed at, and never once taken back

It was said at a table, lightly, and everybody laughed.

That is the detail that has made it so hard to put down. If it had been said in anger you could have written it off as anger. If it had been said cruelly you could have called it cruel. It was said lightly, in the middle of an ordinary meal, by somebody who loved you, and it got a laugh, and then the conversation moved on and nothing else about that evening was remarkable.

You were young. Young enough that you did not have any framework for it. And a sentence delivered to a child who has no framework does not get filed as an opinion. It gets absorbed as information.

And nobody ever took it back, because nobody remembers it. You could ask, today, and they would not know what you were talking about, and they would be telling the truth.

Let me put the plain thing first. You have not been careless with any of this. You have gone at the thing itself for years, in ways nobody at that table has ever known about, and you have gotten up again every single time. Somebody who did not care would not remember the sentence.

So this page is not going to ask you to raise it with them. It is not that day and it may never be.

I want to show you where God writes things down, and what He wrote there.

Lightly is what made it stick

Consider why a light remark outlasts a hard one, because it seems backwards until you see the mechanism.

A hard remark announces itself. A child knows something is happening, and something in them puts up a shield, however small. A light remark has no shield raised against it. It walks in through an open door, alongside the ordinary business of a family meal, and it settles somewhere much deeper than an argument ever reaches.

That is why you are still carrying it and why the person who said it is not.

You are carrying something that arrived undefended, and no remark said lightly has ever once been a light thing. Isaiah 49:16 says behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an engraving matter more than a sentence at a table.

And notice what age did. You were a child. A child has no way to evaluate a claim about themselves made by a parent, because the parent is the source of all the true things. So the sentence did not compete with other information. It became the information.

You were a child when it arrived, and there has never once been a moment when God agreed with it. The written word says I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands, which is a different record entirely, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an older record readable to somebody who only has the one.

Graven upon the palms

Isaiah is answering a specific complaint. The people have said God has forgotten them.

Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands. (Isaiah 49:15-16, King James Version)

Read the first half, because it is startling. He grants the possibility. He says they may forget, meaning even a mother may forget, and He does not soften that or argue with it.

Then He puts Himself in a different category. Yet will I not forget thee.

You have been forgotten by somebody who meant well, and no such forgetting has ever once been copied in heaven. Isaiah 49 grants that human beings forget and then removes God from the category, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that removal land on a specific evening at a specific table.

And read the image. Graven upon the palms of my hands. Not written, graven, which is cut in. On the palms, which is the part of the hand you see when you open it, all day, every time you do anything.

You are cut into the part of His hand that He sees all day, and no light sentence has ever once been carved anywhere near that deep. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an image like that arrive with weight, and the written word says behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.

Two records, one that holds

Now the part I came to say.

There are two records of you. One was made at a kitchen table by somebody tired who does not remember making it. The other was cut into the palms of God's hands, and it is not a description of your behavior or your body, it is your name in a place where it cannot be lost.

You have been living off the first one for decades because it is the one you can hear.

You have two records and only one of them was ever cut in, and no table talk has ever once been graven anywhere. The written word says they may forget, yet will I not forget thee, which is a direct comparison of records, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person read the deeper one.

And here is what makes it usable today. You do not have to erase the first record. It happened and it is a real memory and you cannot un-remember an evening. What you can do is read the other one alongside it, out loud, which is a thing that takes about ten seconds.

You are able to read the other record out loud today, and no memory of yours has ever once had to be erased first. The Spirit of God is the one who makes two records able to sit side by side while only one of them governs, and Isaiah 49:16 is the written word underneath it, where the engraving is on His palms and the forgetting is not.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody reading this.

You are graven on the palms of God's hands, and no sentence said at any table has once been cut anywhere near that deep. I am not decorating that. Isaiah 49:16 says behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes a line like that off a page and puts it in a kitchen thirty years after a meal.

And then this, which is the word I came with.

You have been forgotten by somebody who loved you, and heaven has never once copied that forgetting. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an older record readable to somebody who has only ever had access to the newer one, and the passage is the written word underneath it, where God grants that people forget and then puts Himself outside the category.

You do not have to raise it with anybody today. That was never the assignment. There is another record and it is cut in.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Sentence said lightly at that table, you were never cut in anywhere. Isaiah 49:16 says I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands, so by the Holy Spirit you are not the record that governs, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Child who had no framework to weigh it with, you are not carrying it any longer. The word says they may forget, yet will I not forget thee, and by the Spirit of God I am done living off the shallower of two records.
  3. Father, I am graven on Your palms and that is where my name is kept. Your word says behold, I have graven thee, so by Your Spirit I say it out loud at that table today, and then I put the kettle on.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
